Managing Your Anxiety: Regaining Control By Christopher J. McCullough (Berkley Publishing 1994) This book is valuable in taking the mystery out of "what is happening to my body when I am having an anxiety attack". I found this book to be both educational and helpful in managing my anxiety even though I didn't know at the time what was happening. By explaining in-depth, what is happening to the body during an anxiety attack, it helped to know that your brain will balance itself within minutes, and that you will not stay in an anxiety state for long. This is especially helpful because during an attack, you feel as though you are locked in a perpetual state of total fear and dread. A feeling of impending doom!
By Silence Betrayed - sexual abuse of children in America By John Crewdson (Harper & Row 1988) This is one of the most informative books on sexual abuse of children, and their abusers. It helped me to understand the type of man who sexually abuses his children, and the type of woman that this man chooses to mother his children. It enabled me to put into perspective the type of family, that through denial, indirectly perpetrate crimes of sexual abuse on their children. The title, "By Silence Betrayed", speaks for itself!
Out Growing the Pain - A book for and About Adults Abused as Children
By Eliana Gil Ph.D. (Dell Publishing 1992)
This book is written for couples when one of them is an adult survivor. I personally don't believe that anyone abused as a child should be in a relationship in any capacity until their psyche is healed sufficiently to bring a normalcy to that union. If an adult isn't healthy they can't possibly have a healthy relationship. Conversely, if they're already in a relationship this book gives effective tools to manage that relationship. If you're an adult survivor or know someone who was abused, it is informative in how to deal with the affects of the abuse.
